Let's celebrate the first edition of the Senior Olympics at Sodexo!

From May 28th to 31st, we had the honor of hosting the first edition of the Senior Olympics in our Sodexo care homes. The residents of our establishments – An de Wisen, Op Lamp, Gréngewald, as well as the partner CIPA, Bettembourg – participated enthusiastically in this friendly competition.

Each care home was proudly represented by a team of six members, all driven by a remarkable team spirit and unwavering determination. They all had one goal in mind during their various challenges, ranging from Cornhole, to boules tables, to mini-golf : to win the prestigious Olympic Flame !

We are very proud of all our participants and the enthusiasm they showed throughout these games. This event not only strengthened the camaraderie among the residents, but also demonstrated that age is just a number. Congratulations to the Gréngewald team which won the Olympic Flame 2024!

Mireille Wirtz

Op Lamp Director

Looking back at our interview with Mireille Wirtz, director of the Op Lamp care home :

  • What are the objectives of an event like the Senior Olympics ?

"In addition to sports competitions, such a major event is always an opportunity to connect with other people and make new friends. Social life is particularly important at an advanced age to avoid isolation. Moreover, participating in contests gives participants the feeling that they can still achieve something despite existing restrictions."

  • What impact do you think these games have on the residents ?

"Residents enjoy participating in competitions. The same goes for those who follow as spectators. A little change in daily life is important for everyone. This is especially true for people living in care homes or at CIPA, who are sometimes dependent on the help of others."

  • Have you noticed an improvement in the physical and/or mental well-being of your residents in response to this event ?

"I could see in the eyes of the participants how happy they were to be able to participate in the contests. Thus, we were able to achieve our greatest goal: to improve the quality of life of our residents. Of course, the long preparation also allowed us to contribute to maintaining their physical fitness for longer."

Now let's move on to the interview with Mrs. Fettes, resident from the Op Lamp nursing home:

  • What challenges did you encounter during your participation?

" I have always enjoyed physical exercise and competing with others. However, I wondered if I could still participate in this type of competition despite my health problems and I am happy to have this feeling of achievement today."

  • How did you prepare for the games ?

"With the help of our educators and therapists, we regularly trained for the different planned competitions."

  • What do these games mean to you ?

"They allow you to meet other people. This brings a lot of variety into our daily lives. In addition, physical exercise is good for me."

Together, we continue to celebrate life at every stage.
