Adopting responsible sourcing

The way we buy and consume says a lot about our environmental commitment. To reduce our impact and contribute to community development, we have made responsible sourcing one of our priorities.

Climate change is a major challenge. In 2009, we adopted a global target to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2025. Sodexo Luxembourg is aligned with this objective and is committed to reducing its carbon footprint throughout its value chain.

With over 35,000 consumers in Luxembourg every day, it is our duty to take action to limit our carbon impact out of respect for the Earth and for human beings! More than a third of our CO2 emissions are linked to our supply chain.

Thinking globally, acting locally

We have therefore made sustainable and local sourcing one of our priorities. It is an effective way of taking action to serve our communities, our customers and the planet. By favouring short distribution channels and seasonal produce we are supporting the local economy, the work of small local producers and the promotion of healthier eating, while preserving the environment.

Our sustainable sourcing strategy is being implemented through a number of efforts and objectives. Here is an overview:

  • We favour short circuits and local suppliers.
  • We optimize transport and logistics and our fleet is gradually being equipped with electric vehicles.
  • We favour local and seasonal products, but also plant-based options, which are better for the planet and our customers.
  • We also support fair trade.
  • We establish partnerships with local and inclusive communities, such as those forged with the Tricentenaire sheltered workshops or the ProActif vocational reintegration workshop.

At Sodexo, we consider a purchase to be local as soon as it is produced within a maximum radius of 150 km of Luxembourg. This includes the Grand Duchy, five Belgian arrondissements in the province of Luxembourg, three French départements and ten German Landkreise.

With this in mind, we are working to develop our local sourcing even further and to increase the number of contracts with small local producers.

Why? Our aim in buying locally is threefold:

  • To respond to the needs of our customers and consumers as effectively as possible.
  • To cut our carbon emissions and reduce our environmental footprint.
  • To support local communities.
